One of the big marketing words of the last decade is “Viral,” as in a viral video or a viral social media post, etc.

The reality, however, is that Virality, in a marketing vein, is nothing new. It’s just that pre- internet and pre-Web, the only things that ever went “viral” were those items vetted and filtered by professionals with titles like Editor or Producer or Reporter.

Today? That’s no longer the case.

In fact, because we’ve now moved to a world full of over 4.75 billion mobile phones (2+ billion which are smartphones), and tens of billions of social media accounts worldwide, virtually everyone on the planet is now a publishing company.

So … one of the ways to be successful in marketing has always been getting others to help you tell your story. And in 2017, that’s a big part of what I describe as Publicity version 3.1.

Publicity v3.1 includes figuring out ways to leverage everyone and every company to spread the word about your products, services, organization, people, purpose, and more. These range from:

  • Traditional Media Outlets to Bloggers, and
  • From Podcasters to Content Creators, and
  • From Social Media Users (both professional and consumer) to Redditors and Commentors.

As a result, this whole concept of Publicity v3.1 is complicated. But on the other hand, but it’s not.

Get other people to tell your story.

That’s how simple it is. And that’s how Going Viral begins.
